Dr. Harrow specializes in administering assessments for issues such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, learning disabilities, IEP/504 plans, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, and personality disorders. He also administers presurgical psychological evaluations for bariatric and pain management surgery candidates. In all testing cases, Dr. Harrow works with clients and families as appropriate to identify areas of concern and build a case history before starting the testing process. He then assesses clients based on the information provided and offers clear, personalized feedback at the end of testing to ensure clients leave with a strong understanding of the results.
Dr. John Harrow also specializes in neuropsychological, psychological, and neurodevelopmental testing, as well as adult, family, and couples psychotherapy. He has run several effective and very popular DBT groups. In therapy, he emphasizes acceptance, patience, and personal autonomy in cultivating a warm therapeutic relationship. Drawing on a foundation of evidence-based treatment, Dr. Harrow connects with clients on an individual basis to identify their personal goals for therapy, social, and mental wellness. He recognizes the importance of client comfort, and builds strong alliances with clients that empower them to push their boundaries in a safe, intentional way.
In terms of style, Dr. Harrow values patience, approachability, and non-judgment when working with new clients and families. As trust is built and the therapeutic relationship matures, he enjoys applying humor and strategic self-disclosure to offer clients a range of perspectives on the issues facing them. Dr. Harrow considers maximizing the therapist-client connection vital for doing good therapy, and enjoys finding areas of common interest with his clients to help humanize the counseling process.
Dr. Harrow obtained his master’s degree and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed his clinical internship at the APA-accredited Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign, Illinois. In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Harrow has a strong background in conducting clinical research and continues to apply the latest psychological findings to his work with clients.
In his free time, Dr. Harrow enjoys reading, writing, exercising, and cooking increasingly edible meals! He loves connecting with clients who have similar interests, and is thrilled to discover new hobbies from everyone he meets.
